Vice President Pettis Resigns;
A Candidate for US Congress?
The University Trustees last
week accepted the resignation
of Jerry L. Pettis, vice presi
dent for public relations and de
velopment.
The action was taken at the
request of Mr. Pettis, Univer
sity President Godfrey T. An-derson
announced.
The reasons given by Mr. Pet
tis for his resignation were not
officially disclosed, but specu
lation grows that the 47- year
old Loma Linda resident will
announce his candidacy for the
congressional seat now held by
Representative Harry R. Shep-pard,
San Beraardino County.
The resignation, already effec
tive, would make him free to
open the political campaign if
he intends to do so.
Thus far Mr. Pettis has
withheld public announcement
of any plans he may have for
the congressional race, but pla
cards advocating his candidacy
JERRY L. PETTIS
for the House seat have ap
peared in scattered parts of
the county during recent days.
A successful rancher, elec
tronics firm president and
public relations executive be
fore he accepted the Univer
sity vice presidency in 1961,
Mr. Pettis is also chairman of
the board of councillors, a vol
untary businessmen's group
advising the president on Uni
versity development. He has
been on the School of Medi
cine faculty since 1948, serv
ing since 1954 as assistant
professor of cultural medicine.
" To express regret at losing
the services of so able an offi
cer is an understatement in
deed," Dr. Anderson declared.
" The University is highly grate
ful for the outstanding way in
which Mr. Pettis carried his
responsibilities here. We will
expect to see great things de
velop as he turns his attention
and energies in other direc
tions."
