University to Sponsor Booth Vice President of Peru Addresses
a University Assembly, Visits Campus A Loma Linda University-sponsored
booth will be among
those dotting the parking lot
of the Loma Linda Market May
3 during the Loma Linda
Chamber of Commerce " Round-
Up" of new members.
The program will run from
4: 30 to 8: 30 p. m. with many
businesses of Loma Linda rep
resented. Several concession
stands will be in operation.
At 4 p. m. a parade around
Loma Linda advertising the
" Round- Up" will occur. Any
one owning an antique car is
invited to join the parade and
place the car on display after
wards.
A program of band music by
the Loma Linda Academy band
will begin at 6 p. m. Also on
the program is Myron G.
( Tiny) Miller, University em
ployee in the Grounds Service,
and his Music Makers.
Elmer J. Digneo, president
of the Chamber of Commerce,
and Jerry L. Pettis, candidate
for U. S. Congress, will speak.
At the conclusion of the pro
gram a drawing will be con-
„ ducted with four radios as
prizes.
Elaine Hayton, 40,
Dies at Redlands
Frances Elaine Owen Hayton,
SN' 45, died April 24 at her home
on 210 Belmont Court, Red-lands,
California. She was the
wife of Arthwell Hayton, local
lawyer and member of the Uni
versity Board of Councillors.
Services were April 29 in Red-lands
Seventh- day Adventist
Church.
Mrs. Hayton, 40, was born in
Nebraska. She was a member
of the Volunteer Service League
of the University Hospital.
Survivors include her hus
band, a daughter, Theresa, 13;
three sons, William, 15, Bruce,
9 and'Geoffrey 6. She is sur
vived also by her mother, Mrs.
Mason S. Squier of Loma Linda,
and her father, William H.
Owen of North Platte, Nebras
ka.
Former Students
In Car Accident
Two former students in the
School of Physical Therapy suf
fered face and head lacerations
April 22 when they were in
volved in an automobile accident
in San Bernardino.
Miss Morrine Jo ( Jody)
Frank and Mrs. Robert A.
Nixon Jr., PT62, both of Loma
Linda, were taken to St. Ber-nadine's
Hospital in San Ber
nardino, where they were re
leased April 24.
The accident occurred short
ly after 12 noon when the car
in which the two women were
riding, owned by Miss Frank
and driven by Mrs. Nixon, was
allegedly hit on the right side
by another.
Both women are employed at
Patton State Hospital, San
Bernardino.
Mrs. Nixon's husband is a
junior in the School of Dentis
try. Miss Frank has been ac
cepted to continue her studies
in the School of Physical Ther
apy next fall.
Dean Smith Named
To National Dental
School Committee
Charles T. Smith, DDS, dean
of the School of Dentistry, re
cently received an appointment
to the Review Panel for Con
struction of Schools of Dentis
try, United States Department
of Health, Education and Wel
fare.
He was recommended by Dr.
Donald J. Galagan, chief of the
division of dental public health
and resources.
One of five deans on the 15-
member panel, Dr. Smith will
serve a two- year term expiring
February 28, 1966.
" I consider it an honor to be
elected to the committee," says
Dean Smith.
Among other appointments
which the dean holds is the
chairmanship of the Western
Association of Dental Deans.
He will attend a meeting of
the association May 12 in San
Francisco.
The following day he will
meet as a committee member
with an advisory committee to
California Governor Edmund
G. Brown on dental education
and dental manpower needs.
The committee also will meet
in San Francisco.
April 26 Dean Smith will
speak in Las Vegas, Nevada, ~ t
the invitation of the Western
Association of Dental Exam
iners. His address to the com
mittee, which every year in
vites as speaker a West Coast
dean, will be " Trends in Den
tal Education and Their Rela
tionship to Dental Board Ex
aminations."
Another meeting which Dr.
Smith attended recently was
the American Dental Associa
tion council on legislation. Pre
sent at the all- day session in
San Francisco were dental
leaders from nine western
states.
Hospital Erects
Clinical Office
Building Here
A two- story temporary struc
ture for clinical facilities is be
ing constructed at Loma Lin
da University Hospital with
completion in near future. The
building will contain 14 offices
and is located near the en
trance across from the Hill
Church.
It was necessary to erect this
building, says Clarence A. Mil
ler, hospital and campus busi
ness administrator, as there
otherwise would be no facilities
available for several hospital
and faculty staff members. The
building will ' be used for this
purpose until we can move into
the medical center in 1967,
states Mr. Miller.
Hospital planning reported
on this page reveals that the
University Hospital will be util
ized for convalescent care
when the medical center has
been completed. Mr. Miller
says that 80 beds will be main
tained for long- term convales
cent patients.
The University Administra
tion also has plans for future
utilization of the present hospi
tal facilities.

Century Club will meet jointly.
Also meeting will be the south
ern California chapter of the
National Association of Sev
enth- day Adventist Dentists
( NASDAD).
Those who will participate at
the convention include Charles

School of Dentistry, who will
moderate a symposium of eight
essayists answering questions
from the audience.

to be presented at the meeting

The University was host this
week to an illustrious guest,
Dr. Mario Polar Ugarthece,
vice president of the Republic
of Peru and a law professor at
the University of Lima.
Dr. Polar, his wife and their
two children visited the Uni
versity April 27 while they
were in southern California on
an official state visit celebrat
ing the goodwill enjoyed be
tween their nation and the
United States. He represented
Peru at the Pan American
Friendship Week, which con
cluded prior to his University
visit.
The vice president spoke
with the aid of an interpreter
at the Monday morning convo
cation before students, faculty
and employees of the Univer
sity in the University Church.
He stressed the need for a
closer acquaintance between
the United States and Peru,
saying that the " solidarity of
the two Americas is vital."
" We are not united by geo
graphy or history," he said,
" but by destiny." Emphasizing
the need for solidarity, Dr.
Polar pointed out that the Unit
ed States depends more every
day upon its external relations,
therefo- e good will and security
depend upon the stability of
other countries, especially
those in South America.
Following Dr. Polar's ad
dress, he conducted a news
conference answering questions
about Peruvian- Latin Amer
ican affairs.
Accompanying Dr. and Mrs.
Polar throughout their stay at
the University were Dr. and
Mrs. Robert M. Aragon, of Pa
sadena, who served as inter
preters. Dr. Aragon is an as
sociate member of the School
of Medicine Alumni Associa
tion.
Accompanying the daughter
and son, Claudia and Alonso,
were Karen R. Fillman, PT64,
and A. Wilberth Gonzalez, SM 67.
Mrs. Polar visited the Uni
versity Cerebral Palsy Center
where Bertha M. Appleton, ed
ucational director, conducted a
tour of the facilities.
