Students spend spring vacation in Mexico

During their spring break, two
groups of Loma Linda Universi
ty students 29 in all travel
ed to Mexico where they partic
ipated in medical, dental, and
construction projects in needy
villages.
One team, consisting of 14
medical, dental, nursing, and
allied health students, joined
more than 60 members of the
Calimesa Seventh- day Adventist
Church in a four- day work pro
gram at Valle de Trinidad in Ba-ja
California.
A second group, consisting of
two medical students, one dieti
tian, 10 dental students, and two
nursing students, spent six days
seeing patients in the village of
Abosolo, a five hour drive from
Montemorelos University, near
Monterrey.
A caravan of cars, vans, and
trucks from Loma Linda and Cal
imesa arrived in the peaceful,
high- desert valley known as Valle
de Trinidad mid- Friday after
noon, March 18. Parents, chil
dren, students, pastors, doctors,
dentists, nurses, and builders
busied themselves by setting up
camp and preparing for supper
before sunset.
In the valley is a Seventh- day
Adventist elementary school,
high school, and medical clinic.
This complex, with more than
215 students, served as home
base for the outreach group. The
next morning members of the
Valle de Trinidad Seventh- day
Adventist church shared with
their visitors in leading out in the

Loma Linda City Council votes
to close part of University Street
The City of Loma Linda voted
the closure of two streets in
tersecting the Loma Linda cam
pus of Loma Linda University at
a city council meeting held
March 21.
Voting 4- 0, with one absten
tion by a council member to
avoid any possible conflict of in
terest, the city council voted to
close University Avenue be
tween Anderson and Campus
Streets and to close Stewart
Street between the same two
streets. The University Avenue
portion is expected to be closed
later this year, while closure of
the Stewart Street portion is not
expected for several more years.
Before the streets can be clos
ed, however, the University must
comply with several conditions
including widening certain sec
tions of Campus Street. Prior to
closure of Stewart Street, a new
street must be built north of the
campus.
" The closure of these streets
have been under discussion by
the city and University for the
past 17 years," says Norman J.
Woods, PhD, president of the

held for proton beam facility
An historic event took place
at Loma Linda University
Medical Center on Thursday
morning, April 7, as ground was
broken ceremonially near the
site where a proton beam
TODAY replaces Observer, Newbreak;
will serve all ' Loma Linda' organizations
Welcome to the premier issue
of TODAY!
TODAY is designed to serve all
entities of the ' Loma Linda'
organizations University, Med
ical Center, and Adventist
Health System / Loma Linda. It
succeeds the University Observer,
which served the Loma Linda
and La Sierra campuses, and
Newsbreak, the news publication
designed for the Loma Linda
University Medical Center.
TODAY will be issued twice a
month during the school year
and once a month during June,
July, August, and September.
Deadline for submission of infor
mation for every issue is Tuesday
noon of the preceding week.
Editor- in- chief of TODAY will
be W. Augustus Cheatham, vice
president for public affairs.
Richard Weismeyer, director of
University relations, and Wal-dena
Gaede, associate director of
University, relations, will share
the managing editor's duties.
" Our goal is to keep all our fac
ulty, students, and employees in
formed about the many note
worthy events, proposals, and ac
complishments occurring at this
constantly changing and growing
institution," says Mr. Cheatham.
" We also hope to hear from our
readers with their ideas and sug
gestions as to how TODAY could
serve them even better"

Medical Center, Adventist
Health System / Loma Linda,
and the University's 10 schools,
four correspondents will be
responsible for the different en

Health Professions, Dentistry,
and Nursing; Patti Guthrie,
Graduate School and Schools of
Public Health and Religion; and

The facility will house the
world's first patient- dedicated
proton beam accelerator, which

Medical Center, with introduc

Cheatham, vice- president for
public affairs for Adventist
Health System/ Loma Linda and
Loma Linda University; and an
invocation offered by M. Jerry
Davis, LLUMC chairman of the
Chaplains Service.
