Gala celebration for Hulda Crooks' 92nd birthday planned
A gala birthday celebration
honoring Loma Linda Univer
sity's own Hulda Crooks will be
held Thursday, May 19, at the
Maruko Hotel San Bernar-dino
Convention Center in San
Bernardino.
Affectionately known as
" Grandma Whitney" for her 23
Approximately 500 people attended the La Sierra campus Health Fair Expo on April 17
to take advantage of vital health- care services. Offered at the Health Fair Expo were free
screenings for height, weight, blood pressure, vision, and for a fee of $ 15 an optional
32' part blood chemistry screening. Blood chemistry results are mailed to each participant
within three to five weeks after the fair. The La Sierra campus event also offered free im
munizations in addition to screenings for podiatry, pulmonary function, and hearing. Educa
tional exhibits included booths on rape crisis, child abuse, eating disorders, and cancer
prevention.
Picasso influence to be seen in La Sierra art exhibit
An exhibition, Homage to
Picasso, opened at the Roy and
Frances Brandstater Gallery on
the La Sierra campus on Mon
day, May 9 and will continue
through Thursday, June 9.
A public reception is schedul
ed for Sunday, May 15, from 2
to 5 p. m.
This collection of paintings,
originally assembled by Tony
Shafarzi of the Shafarzi Gallery
in New York for an international
art exposition in Zurich, Switz
erland, illustrates the continu
ing influence of Pablo Picasso on
contemporary art.
Included in this exhibition are
paintings by Donald Beacher,
David Bowes, Ronnie Cutrons,
Futura 2000, Keith Haring, Brett
de Palma, Herve di Rosa, and
Kenny Scharf, all active artists
of the 1980s. The artists have
overtly borrowed many of Picas
so's images and integrated them
with their own style and vision.
This collection of paintings is
on loan from the Eli Broad Fami
ly Foundation of Los Angeles.
The Eli Broad Foundation was
established for the purpose of ac
quiring contemporary American
art by leading artists. The Foun
dation is assembling an impor
tant collection which attempts
to represent the best of contem
porary paintings and sculpture in
the 1980s.
The Brandstater Gallery hours
are: Monday through Thursday,
9 a. m. to 12 noon, and 1 to 5
p. m.; Friday, 9 a. m. to 12 noon;
and Saturday, 2 to 5 p. m. or by
appointment.

Crooks has climbed the highest
mountain in the lower 48 states,
since age 64. Last year, she
became an instant celebrity in
Japan by climbing Japan's
highest mountain, 12,388- foot
Mt. Fuji, on July 24, at the age
of 91.
Invited to the May 19 event
are numerous leaders in govern
ment and business plus sports
and entertainment celebrities.
A special invitation is extend
ed to all Loma Linda University
and Loma Linda University
Medical Center employees and
to the local community to at
tend the celebration.
Tickets, which are tax-deductible,

from Mrs. Crooks' birthday par

Mrs. Crooks has been a guest
on several television shows in
cluding the Johnny Carson
Tonight Show and the Wil
Shrinner Show.
Her extraordinary achieve
ments have received nationwide
attention through the print and
electronic media. Following her
climb of Mt. Fuji, Mrs. Crooks
was named " Person of the
Week" by ABCs Nightly News

Medical Center slates Faith
Festival 1988 for May 21
Faith Festival 1988, a celebra
tion of the history, faith, and
hope of Loma Linda University
Medical Center and of the Loma
Linda community, will be held
Saturday, May 21, in the Univer
sity Church.
A liturgical service in which
25 persons mostly LLUMC
employees will participate is
scheduled at both 8: 30 a. m. and
11: 15 a. m.
Music will be provided by
Another Peace, a student vocal
group from the La Sierra campus
of Loma Linda University. This
group won the McDonald's
Gospel Choir Contest in the
Shrine Auditorium in Los
Angeles in 1987.
Mike Charles, a professional
actor from Riverside, will per
form a dramatization depicting
the essence of the caring
physician.
Brdoke Lawson, a nurse, will
relate the story of the return of
Ulysses, from Homer's Odyssey.
A brief homily, " Give Me a
Mountain," will be presented by
M. Jerry Davis, RelD, chairman
of the LLUMC Chaplain
Services.
The names of all Medical
Center employees and all peo
ple trained at the Medical
Center during the past year will
be printed as the background of
the church bulletin that day.
All Medical Center employees
and their families, as well as
community residents, are invited
to attend this annual celebration
of the history, faith, and purpose
of the Loma Linda tradition.
Women's Club plans
spring fashion show
A spring fashion show in
cluding clothes for graduations,
vacations, and weddings will be
held on Monday, May 9, at 7
p. m. at the Bernard Brandstater
home.
Sponsored by the Loma Linda
University Women's Club, the
fun and refreshments are open
to all, with a minimal fee for
non- members.
